The Salt Lake City Stars are the G-League affiliate for the Utah Jazz. The NBA has been trying to cultivate its development league and has seen some success stories in recent years. Top draft picks are coming from the G-League and it is making it an attractive place to coach. The Stars have reportedly hired former Marquette basketball coach Steve Wojciechowski to be their next head coach.
Salt Lake City Stars Hire Steve Wojciechowski
Wojciechowski took over for Buzz Williams when he left for Virginia Tech in 2014. He was a highly touted candidate who had worked under legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. His time in Marquette did not see much success for the team. During his tenure, the team never made it out of the round of 64 in the NCAA tournament and only had two appearances. He was barely above .500 overall and under .500 in the Big East. This ultimately led to him being fired at the end of the 2020-21 season. ‘

Can He Make It Work In The G-League?
Different coaches have different strengths and weaknesses. Some thrive at the college level while struggling in the NBA or vice versa. Others do well with smaller programs but cannot thrive in larger markets. The G-League provides a good opportunity to get a second chance at coaching while not being under the spotlight. Premium talent is also getting easier to find in the G-League which can help a coach make a name for himself.
It is great to see Steve Wojciechowski get another chance at coaching. While it didn’t work out at Marquette, he hopefully can find his way with the Salt Lake City Stars.
