The media and the New York Mets fan base have scrutinized Steve Cohen. His three to five-year plan of winning a World Series Title right away as the team’s owner has not gone as planned.
The Mets will be on the outside looking in once this season ends. Steve Cohen faced the media for the first time since the MLB Trade Deadline.
Steve Cohen Speaks For First Time Since MLB Trade Deadline
One of the things he said to the media was, “The expectations were really high this year, and my guess is next year will be a lot lower… I don’t want to roll out a team out there that we’re gonna be embarrassed by.”
The New York Mets spent a lot of money on Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer and winded up trading them both at the deadline. Verlander returned to the Houston Astros for two prospects, and Scherzer was traded to the Texas Rangers for another prospect.
The front office could not commit to being serious contenders in 2024. There were other pieces that the Mets dealt at the trade deadline, including Tommy Pham, David Robertson, Mark Cahna, and Dominic Leone. First baseman Pete Alonso will have an expiring contract after the 2024 season, and some believe there could be a trade for him this offseason.
Steve Cohen spoke about the Pete Alonso matter as well in his press conference, “We love Pete as a Met. He’s an integral part of the Mets. He’s still with us for another year. We hope things work out.”
Steve Cohen was asked about Pete Alonso's future as a Met:

Steve Cohen’s Future Plans
It appears as if Steve Cohen is pivoting towards the long-term future and not the short-term future. The eyes for the Mets will be on the 2025 season and possibly the 2026 season to be serious contenders again. He feels it is time to build up the farm system and let them develop and have homegrown talent.
Another thing to watch for this offseason, and it is the worst-kept secret in baseball, is that Steve Cohen will look to hire David Stearns from the Milwaukee Brewers as the President of Baseball Operations. It will be interesting to see whether or not Billy Eppler also stays as the general manager next season and whether or not Buck Showalter stays as the manager for next season.
For now, Steve Cohen has a vote of confidence in him but feels like this season is more on the players than anything. He said, “I don’t put it on Buck. I put it on the players.”

A lot can change between now and the end of the season. Steve Cohen doesn’t plan on spending money as heavily this offseason, and you can forget about the New York Mets being in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes this offseason as well.
