The St. Louis Cardinals traditionally have put together teams that have great pitching staffs with depth. Unfortunately that has not been the case in 2023 and they have parted ways with pitchers at the trade deadline such as Genesis Caberera, Jordan Montgomery, Jordan Hicks, and Jack Flaherty. During the upcoming off-season John Mozeliak has revealed that a part of his offseason plan is to add new arms.
Specifically the Cardinals President of Baseball Operations has indicated that he wants to add three starting pitchers prior to the 2024 season starting. He indicated that he wants to take an aggressive approach during the off-season in order to avoid a repeat of what happened during the 2023 campaign.

John Mozeliak’s full quote on his future pursuit of starting pitchers is below.
“Realistically, we know we have to add three starters this offseason. We know we have to add depth. We went into the season thinking that we would have that covered. It didn’t work out that way. Having a repeat of that would not be in the best interest of the franchise. So I think our approach is going to be very aggressive on the pitching side. We’ll see where it takes us.”
Some upcoming starting pitcher free agents include: Shoehi Ohtani, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Martin Perez, Julio Rodriguez, Noah Syndergaard, Alex Wood, Zack Greinke, Carlos Carrasco, Aaron Nola, Lucas Giolito, Blake Snell, Luis Severino, and Kyle Gibson. Players with options that need to be decided include Marcus Stroman, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Michael Clevinger.
It is possible that the Cardinals add starting pitchers via trade as well. They did get quite a large prospect haul from this year’s deadline and could look to deal from that collection of players. Regardless, it will be interesting to see if John Mozeliak can deliver three new starting pitchers prior to the start of the 2024 season.
