The St. Louis Cardinals 2023 season has not gone to anyone’s plans. Last year’s National League Central division champions sold at the trade deadline and are gearing up to compete again in the future. With the team being out of playoff contention this allows players to address injuries that have been playing through. For one outfielder that could mean proceeding with season ending ankle surgery.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson is considering proceeding with season ending ankle surgery.
In mid-May Dylan Carlson sprained his ankle and missed three weeks because of it. He now has undergone further testing and is contemplating whether or not he should undergo season ending arthroscopic ankle surgery. Regarding the decision and the injury here is what the outfielder had to say.
“It (the ankle injury) was something that we realized might need some more (surgical) attention down the road, so we’re taking a look at it again.
A portion of the outfielders struggles this season could potentially be attributed to the lingering ankle issue, but overall his production has been down since he busted onto the scene in 2021. This year the 24 year old has a .651 OPS and 79 OPS+.
Whether or not Dylan Carlson decides to go through with an arthroscopic procedure now or in the off-season there is no concern that his readiness for spring training would be affected. He was a popular name at this year’s trade deadline and rumors surrounding the young controllable outfielder could surface again over the winter months.
