The St. Louis Cardinals have opened up a 40-man roster spot by designating veteran infielder Taylor Motter for assignment. Motter has had three different stints on the Cardinals roster in which he was previously DFA’d two other times. Both times he previously went unclaimed on waivers.
This year the 33 year old veteran infielder has struggled at the plate and he has a .171/.232/.211 slash line. His career numbers throughout his six year big league career are not much better. In the past his defensive versatility has been appealing to teams.
Taylor Motter has been DFA’d by the St. Louis Cardinals and a 40-man roster spot has been opened up.

In conjunction with Taylor Motter being DFA’d and opening a 40-man roster spot the Cardinals made a few other transactions. They recalled Jose Fermin and reinstated Matthew Liberatore while also placing JoJo Romero on the 15-day IL. This still gives them room to add one player to the 40-man roster.
It will be interesting to see who the last 40-man roster spot goes to. Wilking Rodriguez is one person who the Cardinals could consider. He was a Rule 5 pick last offseason but has been recovering from surgery that he underwent in May. Giving him a look over the last month of the season is a real possibility.
