St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright elected to come back and play baseball this year in his age 41 season (turning 42 at the end of August). He currently is just two wins away from 200 career victories and his spot in the starting rotation could be nearing an end due to a horrendous season.
Wainwright has an 8.78 ERA this year in 15 starts. Cardinals president John Mozeliak and manager Oliver Marmol both have indicated that he will start Thursday, August 17 against the New York Mets but that he could be removed from the rotation if things go poorly.
Despite a quest for 200 career wins, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright could be removed from the starting rotation (MLB News).
“We’ve talked to him, and he understands that he’s got to do better,” Mozeliak said of Wainwright. “He’s appreciative that he’s getting the opportunity [on Thursday], but he understands that things could change [in the future].
“We sat down, we talked through it, like: ‘Listen, we’re going to take your next start and I’m looking forward to seeing it. And then we’re going to sit down after and reevaluate how it went and go from there,’” Marmol said. “Hopefully, it goes well, and we can keep going. If it doesn’t, we’ll sit down and we’ll have another honest conversation as to what does this really look like moving forward and what’s best? He’s been great about it.”
With just six weeks left in the season, and the Cardinals not in playoff contention, it will be interesting to see what they decide to do with Adam Wainwright. He has indicated that 2023 will be his last season. Wins as a pitcher are hard to come by, so whether he is in the starting rotation or bullpen it’s hard to predict if he will get to 200 or not.
