In 2021, the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners swapped catcher Jacob Nottingham three times within a span of just three weeks. This unusual series of transactions became widely known around Major League Baseball, but the surprising twist is that the saga didn’t end there and it’s still unfolding.
The initial Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners exchange involving Jacob Nottingham
Jacob Nottingham was acquired by the Brewers in 2016 as part of the trade that sent Khris Davis to the Oakland Athletics. He made his MLB debut with Milwaukee in 2018, and by 2021, he had exhausted his minor league options. This led to the Seattle Mariners claiming him off waivers on April 28, 2021. However, shortly after this transaction, the Brewers faced a roster issue when Omar Narvaez was placed on the injured list, prompting Milwaukee to trade for Nottingham again on May 2, 2021, in exchange for cash. Once Narvaez returned, Nottingham found himself on waivers once more, and on May 20, 2021, the Mariners claimed him for a second time.
What happened to Jacob Nottingham after the 2021 season?
After a crazy three weeks and a lot of airplane rides between Milwaukee and Seattle, Jacob Nottingham nearly finished out the year with the Mariners as he was released by the organization on September 21, 2021. He spent the 2022 season in the Baltimore Orioles organization, re-joined the Mariners prior to the 2023 season, but was traded to the San Francisco Giants on May 24, 2023. After being released by the Giants on June 28, 2023 he spent time with the Washington Nationals as well as with two different teams in the Mexican League.
