In a season with a lot of lows, especially on the offensive side of the ball, here’s a stat to ponder: The Packers are tied (with Tampa Bay and Houston) for the fewest rushing touchdowns this season with four.
Running back Aaron Jones leads Green Bay with a pair of rushing TDs, and fellow RB AJ Dillon has one rushing score. Rookie receiver Christian Watson has the other rushing TD for the Packers this year. For the record, last season Green Bay had 13 rushing TDs… Dillon led the team with five, Jones had four, and QB Aaron Rodgers had three running touchdowns.
Fewest rushing TDs in a season for Packers
The fewest rushing TDs the Packers had in a season was five in 1977 and 1990. They had seven in 1992 and 1998. In ’77, Green Bay finished the season 4-10, while in 1990 they had a 6-10 record. Fourteen times since 1966 the Packers had fewer than 10 rushing TDs in a season.
Passing TDs are typically the most frequent way to find the end zone in the NFL. This season, there have been 463 passing touchdowns to 314 rushing touchdowns. The Packers are one of 23 teams that have more passing TDs than rushing TDs this year; they have 19 passing TDs and only four rushing scores. Three teams have the same number of passing and rushing TDs, and six teams (Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, New York Giants, Carolina, and Pittsburgh) have more rushing TDs than passing this season.
Looking back to the start of the Super Bowl era (1966), the Packers have had only nine seasons since then where they had more rushing TDs than passing TDs in a season. The last time they had more rushing TDs than passing was in 1988 when they scored 13 times via pass and 14 times by running.
With 19 TDs via pass and four via run this season, the Packers have scored one rushing TD for every 4.75 passing TDs. That’s currently the highest ratio in the history of the team. There are six games remaining, so that ratio for this season could easily change.
