An idea being thrown around in the media ever since last years trade deadline. It’s clear around the football world that the Packers want a second weapon at wide receiver, and many think one of the best players in the league is available. Last season reports of Odell Beckham Jr.’s displeasure in Cleveland were widely known. However, if his problem was winning then a 13-3 Packers team should be a dream come true. Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons if a trade were to happen.
What Would a Trade Include?
Everything starts and ends with Brian Gutekunst. Cleveland gave up a first round pick and Jabrill Peppers to acquire Beckham last season, and still missed the post season. Taking this into account, there isn’t much precedent for success with Beckham meaning he may not be worth it. However, it can also be said that he has never been on a winning team as he has only made the playoffs once in his young career. If Gutekunst wants to draft a wide receiver with the 30th pick, it may not be worth trading away that pick for Beckham. However, if the front office can get Odell for a second round pick and maybe a player, they should definitely pull the trigger.
Pros of getting Odell
The pros really can’t get more obvious. The Packers would be getting a generational talent at wide out to pair with their already top five wide receiver. There wouldn’t be an argument from Adams end for targets either, as he has expressed his interest in playing with Beckham on social media. They would be fitting right into their “win now” mentality by getting a guy like Odell. Additionally, Aaron Rodgers would be by far the best quarterback OBJ will have played with. All these factors could easily keep Odell in check and limit any drama as fans have seen in the past. Odell is a human highlight reel, and could instantly make an impact for an already great team.
Odell Beckham Jr. Career Numbers
- 464 Catches in 74 Games
- 6,511 Receiving Yards
- 48 Receiving Touchdowns
- 2 Passing Touchdowns
Cons of Trading for Beckham
Believe it or not, trading for a superstar can have a some cons attached to it. Just look at the Browns last year. The first concern that comes to mind is the system. The Packers finally seemed to become comfortable in their new offense towards the end of last season. Adding a superstar to scheme into a developing offense that already has a star running back and another star wide receiver seems problematic. On the other hand, if Matt LaFleur can make it work, the offense would be explosive. Additionally, Beckham isn’t on the quiet side. He has an tendency to react out of his passion for the game, and this can sometimes be seen as a distraction. Having never played for a winning team makes it tough to predict how he would handle adversity in the situation.
