The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their first game against Pittsburgh this season 8-7 on Thursday night. It obviously left a bad taste in their mouths as they came out of the gate swinging in game two of the four-game set in Pittsburgh. Corbin Burnes earned his seventh win of the season despite some command issues. Trevor Kelley allowed a run in two innings of relief and threw 52 pitches. Best of all, at least from a pitching perspective, infielder Mike Brosseau pitched a perfect ninth inning to finish the game.

Rowdy Tellez is on an incredible extra-base hit streak

The Brewers’ slugging first baseman was not a finalist at first base for the All-Star game, but that did not slow him down. Rowdy Tellez finished the game 2-5 with a home run and five RBI.

Rowdy Tellez hit an double later in the game to knock in two more runs. He is now hitting .247/.319/.498 with 16 home runs and 53 RBI on the season. According to Mike Vassallo, Tellez is on pace for 33 home runs and 105 RBI in his first full season in Milwaukee. His last nine hits have been extra base hits.

Willy Adames hit a grand slam and donned the Gauntlet

Tellez’s home run broke a tie with Willy Adames for the most home runs for the Brewers this season. Tellez did not hold the lead by himself for long, though. In the eighth inning, Adames hit his fourth career grand slam for his 16th home run of the season.

    More Brewers home runs

In addition to Tellez and Adames, three other Brewers players hit home runs in Milwaukee’s 19-2 drubbing of Pittsburgh.

    Luis Urias

Kolten Wong got the Brewers on the board first in the second inning when he hit a RBI double to score Andrew McCutchen. Luis Urias then hit a two-run blast to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead.

    Keston Hiura

Keston Hiura is not getting very much playing time, and his hitting .217/.331.425 with seven home runs and 15 RBI.

    Victor Caratini

Victor Caratini did not even start this game. When he did come in, he didn’t even play catcher. Instead, he played a few innings at first base. In his only plate appearance, Caratini launched a solo home run to give the Brewers an 18-2 lead.

The insertion of Caratini at first base was an interesting one. Very soon, Pedro Severino will be eligible to return from suspension. Before testing positive for a banned substance, Severino was having a torrid spring. Under MLB’s collective bargaining agreement, he will not be eligible to play in the postseason. Perhaps the Brewers are trying work out a way they can keep both Caratini and Severino on the Big League roster until the end of the season.

    Game Notes

    • Andrew McCutchen played right field for the Brewers tonight and finished the game 3-6 with two runs scored; he is now hitting .253/.325/389 on the season.
    • Christian Yelich was 1-3 with two walks and two runs scored for the Brewers as their leadoff hitter.
    • In addition to his scoreless ninth inning, Mike Brosseau was 1-2 with three RBI.
    • Jonathan Davis returned to the Brewers lineup after missing some time due to soreness following his amazing catch in Tampa Bay; he was 0-3 two walks and two runs.

    Up Next

The Brewers have not announced a starter for tomorrow’s game. The Pirates will send Bryse Wilson (0-4, 8.29 ERA) to the hill against Milwaukee. Game three of this four game series will take place at 3:05 CST.
