The 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC) is rapidly approaching. A handful of Brewers will be participating in the event including Devin Williams, Sal Frelick, Abraham Toro, Luis Urias, and Rowdy Tellez. Both Tellez and Urias will be a part of team Mexico.
What is the backstory on Rowdy Tellez’s roots to Mexico?
Tellez is unique in the fact that his mother had a Jewish heritage, his father Mexican roots, and he was born in California. His grandfather played baseball in Mexico and eventually made his way to Colorado where he played for the Greeley Grays. The Gray’s were founded as early as 1925 by migrant farmers.
Both Israel and Mexico offered him spots in this years WBC. Mexico is who Tellez ultimately chose.
This decision allows him to play alongside teammate Luis Urias. Mexico also is in the same pool as the United States and will play at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Tellez passed up an opportunity to play in the 2017 WBC, so it should be fun to watch him contribute as a part of team Mexico.
