Aaron Rodgers could be a 49ers QB next season?
It’s been widely speculated Aaron Rodgers could be looking for a Hollywood ending. Rodgers has always had a chip on his shoulder after the San Francisco 49ers drafted Alex Smith over him. Rodgers has had a successful career with the Green Bay Packers. However, it’s possible he could have the opportunity to tie a bow on his career with the 49ers.
The Packers will need to decide on the quarterback this offseason. Jordan Love’s fifth-year option is coming up. Rodgers has played well this season but has regressed some. The Packers will likely decide to part ways with one of their quarterbacks.
The 49ers are a perennial Super Bowl contender. They have great defense and several elite playmakers on offense. Their head coach, Kyle Shanahan, would love to be paired with an elite quarterback to lead the team to a Super Bowl victory. (The 49ers were close with Jimmy Garoppolo in Super Bowl LIV.)
Two NFL general managers think the 49ers will try to get Rodgers
According to a report by Jason Cole with Outkick, the 49ers could be looking at Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Cole cited two general managers who named Rodgers as someone the 49ers are expected to go after in the 2023 offseason:
Two general managers said last week they expect the 49ers to seriously inquire about Brady and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers depending on whether either or both of those quarterbacks decide to move on.
“The Brady scenario is easy, he’s free,” one GM said. “Rodgers has more moving parts because you don’t know what kind of Zen thought he’s going to have. He might say he wants out. I could also see the Packers moving on to Jordan Love if they can figure out the cap situation.
“But everybody knows the 49ers need a quarterback to win now.”
This would be a massive shakeup in the NFC. It would be interesting to see if Rodgers could retire after winning a Super Bowl for the franchise that famously passed him over. That would make one championship with the Packers and one with the 49ers. Which one would mean more to Rodgers?
