The Milwaukee Brewers lost star shortstop Willy Adames to the San Francisco Giants over the weekend. Adames signed a seven-year deal worth $162 million with San Francisco. Many are wondering what is next for Milwaukee after he departed for free agency, which was expected.
There are a lot of things that general manager Matt Arnold will have to decide. Willy Adames played a huge role in the Brewers lineup for the last two seasons.
Milwaukee Brewers Will Receive Extra Draft Compensation After Willy Adames Signed With the San Francisco Giants
With the Brewers losing Adames, there is a small victory in him signing his big contract with San Francisco. Christopher Kline of fansided.com reported:
“Willy Adames was the first All-Star position player to sign with a new team in free agency, landing with the San Francisco Giants on a franchise-record $182 million contract over seven years. That is obviously a tough blow for the Milwaukee Brewers, who have now parted with Corbin Burnes and Adames in back-to-back winters.
The reigning NL Central champs don’t benefit from this organizational mandate of cheapness, but there is hope that Joey Oritz and a few marginal additions can help paper over the void left by Adames. There is seldom a silver lining to losing arguably the best bat in your lineup, but the Brewers can at least take solace in the general lack of precedence for Adames’ $182 million payday. He’s a great player, but that would have been a preposterous number only a few years ago. Prices are skyrocketing around the league.
Also, Milwaukee does get a juicy future draft pick out of this. Since Adames rejected his qualifying offer and signed for greater than $50 million, the Brewers will receive an additional draft pick between the end of the first round and the beginning of Comp Round A.”
Interestingly, the Brewers received a draft pick for losing Adames this offseason. One of the things that Milwaukee has been good with over the years is drafting and developing players.
Potential Replacements
The Brewers could replace Adames with Joey Ortiz or Brice Turang at shortstop for the 2025 season. If that is the case, they will need to trade for either a third baseman or a second baseman as well or sign someone in free agency.
Another name to watch for in trade talks this offseason is Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm. With a potential Ortiz move to shortstop, trading for Bohm would make sense. Another player to watch for is Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon.
