The 2021 NFL season marks the 25th anniversary of the Green Bay Packers’ Super Bowl XXXI winning team. That particular Packers’ team consisted of legendary players such as Brett Favre, Reggie White, Gilbert Brown, and many, many others. To commemorate that team and their historic run, Wisconsin Sports Heroics in partnership with Mayfield Sports was able to speak with Green Bay Packers’ legend, Dorsey Levens.
At which moment did you know the 1996 team was going to be special?
“At the beginning of training camp. We had lost the NFC Championship Game the year before in Dallas. I think we were even winning in that game and the Cowboys came back to beat us. So we knew we were a good team. We had a lot of optimism going forward. Our motto in training camp that year was ‘Super Bowl or Bust.'”
You had a really strong performance in the NFC Championship Game that year. Did that increase the pressure you felt going into the Super Bowl.
“No, no pressure. I was not the starter that year, if you remember. That was Edgar Bennett. The year before, I was the starting full back. But then they drafted William Henderson who took my starting job. Even though I did not like losing my starting job, I was happy to return to playing running back, the position I played all my life. As the season went on, I played better and better and the coaches gave me more opportunities.
When did it hit you that you were a Super Bowl Champion?
When the clock hit :00. I felt a wave of emotions; relief, excitement. I actually cried. That’s the goal, you know? Every little kid playing in their backyard talks about winning the Super Bowl someday. It was like actually living in a Disney movie.
Now that your playing career is over, I understand you teach a fitness class. What inspired you to get into teaching?
I teach a Spin Class, yes. For me, I worked out a lot. An 11-year NFL career can really take a toll on your body, and cycling was a great way to stay in shape. I hated the music in other spin classes though, and the only way I could get the music I wanted for my workout was to teach my own class. So that’s what I did.
What age groups do you target for your classes?
All age groups. However, you should really be over 16, so my classes are for anyone over 16. And I always tell people, just do what you can. When you can do more, then do more.
*Note: Dorsey Levens offers his class virtually. If you want to take a spin class with the former Packers’ running back, you can contact him via email: soloride25@gmail.com. If you happen to live in the Atlanta area, you can attend his classes in person. You can also check out his Instagram: dorsey_levens.
I also have seen that you have done some acting since retiring from the NFL. Could you tell me a little about that?
Yeah, I love acting. I actually became interested in when I was in Green Bay. I started taking acting classes there. I’ve had some roles in some shows, recently I was on Good Girls on NBC. I toured with Tyler Perry and his Madea on the Run tour. A while ago, I had a role in the movie, We Are Marshall. I also had a role in a move called The Gridiron, which is a movie that was filmed in the UK about American football. I also did a movie about relationships called Three Can Play That Game.
