A prospective Packers tight end is having a great season
The Green Bay Packers will be looking at pass catchers this off-season. The Packers have a lot of injuries at wide receiver and some players dealing with injuries at tight end. Tight end is one position many Packers fans wish the team would address. One NFL mock draft suggests a college star would make a great Packers tight end.
The Packers have pretty good tight ends with Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan. However, Lewis won’t be on the roster for much longer. The Packers could be more dynamic, with one prospect getting a lot of buzz in this draft.
Kyle Crabbs with The Draft Network has the Packers drafting Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer at 17th overall. Crabbs thinks Mayer will fit in perfectly with the direction the offense is going.
Green Bay’s offensive transition has already leaned into a more run-heavy approach, but how about a player who can pick up both the run game AND the pass game in Michael Mayer? Robert Tonyan has a place close to Aaron Rodgers’ heart but the team would likely be wise to start thinking about life with and without Rodgers for the long haul.
Mayer could be a steal for the Packers as he helps the waning of Aaron Rodgers’ career and the beginning of the next quarterback in Green Bay.
Michael Mayer is having an excellent season
Mayer would be a star for the Packers immediately. His nickname at Notre Dame is “Baby Gronk” because of how he uses his size, like Rob Gronkowski. Mayer is an elite tight end at the college level, and he’s having a great season. Mayer has 411 yards receiving and five touchdowns through six games for the Irish.
This Saturday, Mayer led the Irish in receiving with 115 yards and a touchdown as Notre Dame defeated UNLV 44-21. Opposing defenses have had a hard time all year trying to defend him. He looks like he could start for the Packers this Sunday against the Washington Commanders.
Here are a couple of clips of his excellent performance on Saturday.
