Michael Mayer Scouting Report
Per NFL Draft Buzz, Mayer has the following strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths
- Mayer fights his way off the line of scrimmage against press coverage, showing quick, violent hands and good balance
- Has the burst off the snap to be split out wide in the NFL
- Good quickness off the snap. Has good speed for the position to attack the seam.
Weaknesses
- Largely a non-factor downfield
- Inconsistent with his release off the line of scrimmage
- Mayer really isn’t a burner and doesn’t have elite suddenness, which is problematic considering his average size

Michael Mayer in Mock Drafts
According to NFL Mock Draft Database, Mayer is a projected first-round pick. He is the top TE prospect in the class and would be a huge asset to any offense. His ability to play a wide receiver-type role as well as a tight end role is attractive to many teams. Below is a list of mock drafts and where they have Mayer being drafted.
- Bleeding Green Nation – No. 9 overall: Panthers
- Draft Countdown – No. 11 overall: Titans
- Sporting News – No. 15 overall: Packers
- Newsday – No. 15 overall: Packers
- Sports Illustrated – No. 21 overall: Jaguars
Would Michael Mayer Fit on the Packers?
Mayer is a popular pick for the Packers at no. 15 in many mock drafts. The Packers need some help at the tight end position. Even if they resign Robert Tonyan, the Packers’ offense runs better than there is a dominant tight end. Mayer could not only help the tight end position but also line up for some wide receiver sets. Pair him with Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson and defenses are going to have some trouble.
Check Out Another Prospect That Could Fit For the Packers
There is a great chance that Mayer ends up on the Packers. GM Brian Gutekunst has invested heavily in the defense and I expect him to focus on the offense this year in the first round. There are a couple of really nice tight end prospects so Gutekunst could decide to pass on Mayer and hope another one falls into the second round. However, Mayer might be too good a prospect to pass up.
