Cam Smith Scouting Report
Per NFL Draft Buzz, Smith has the following strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths
- Shows good instincts when facing the action in zone coverage, and Smith has solid ball skills
- Has the length and speed to emerge as a starter two or three years down the line
- Has the quick feet to mirror receivers underneath
Weaknesses
- Isn’t great in route recognition when he’s facing the action, is hesitant and susceptible to double moves, and too often gets unnecessarily handsy when playing trail position
- Fails to maintain inside technique in man coverage
- Holds the ball loosely after making the interception

Cam Smith in Mock Drafts
According to NFL Mock Draft Database, Smith is a projected as a late first-round pick. Because he needs some polish, he will likely fit on a team that is not needing to start him immediately. Look for a team with a deep secondary to get him in the building and coach him up before starting him. Below is a list of mock drafts and where they have Smith being drafted.
- Yahoo Sports – No. 10 overall: Eagles
- AM NY – No. 19 overall: Bucs
- Gridiron Heroics – No. 21 overall: Jaguars
- Draft Countdown – No. 26 overall: Bengals
Would Cam Smith Fit on the Packers?
Smith is a tricky fit for the Packers. On the one hand, bringing him in behind Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes and Rasul Douglas would give him time to develop. On the other hand, the Packers are built to compete now and need players that can make an immediate impact on the field. It all depends on what GM Brian Gutekunst and the Packers organization wants to do with their first round pick.

If the Packers take Cam Smith it will say a lot about the direction of the organization. Smith is a two to three year project. If they take him, it means they are hoping to compete in two to three years rather than immediately. Smith would by no means be a bad pickup but I think that Gutekunst drafts someone who can play now.
