Philadelphia 76ers: As far as random Tuesday nights during the NBA offseason, this past Tuesday was pretty eventful, to say the least. The Los Angeles Lakers made waves by signing Christian Wood to a two-year deal, thereby picking up one of the last remaining big names in free agency.
Well, not to be outdone, the Sixers made a move of their own by reuniting with three-time NBA champion Danny Green.
REPORT: Philadelphia 76ers to Sign Danny Green
ESPN’s NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news on Twitter:
“Free agent G Danny Green has agreed on a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, agent Sam Permut of @RocNationSports tells ESPN,” Woj wrote in his tweet.
The money aspect of the deal was not revealed, but it would probably be safe to assume that Green has agreed to a veteran’s minimum contract with Philly.
As Woj noted, Green has close ties with Joel Embiid and a few other individuals within the 76ers. This also includes new head coach Nick Nurse, who Green played for with the Toronto Raptors during their title-winning campaign in 2018-19.
This will be the 6-foot-6 small forward’s second stint in Philly after having spent two seasons with them between 2020 and 2022. During that span, Green averaged 7.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, while also knocking down 2.1 triples per game on a highly efficient 39.5 percent clip.
Green’s first spell with the 76ers ended last summer after the team traded him to the Memphis Grizzlies, where he would end up playing just three games. Memphis traded him again mid-season to the Houston Rockets as part of a three-team trade (with the Los Angeles Clippers) that centered around John Wall.
Houston had no room on their squad for Green and they waived him shortly after acquiring him in the trade. The Cleveland Cavaliers picked him off the waiver wire, and it was with the Cavs that he ended the 2022-23 campaign.
Green isn’t exactly a massive signing for the Sixers but considering the wealth of experience he has under his belt coupled with his ability to stretch the floor (when healthy, at least), this is still a pretty good move by Philly.
