The Milwaukee Brewers dropped two out of three games to the Pittsburgh Pirates with Thursday afternoons contest consisting of a record setting performance by rookie phenom Paul Skenes. Skenes was drafted first overall by the Pirates last year and now has been sensational through his first 11 MLB starts. His latest epic performance has put him in some elite company.
Paul Skenes was pulled against the Milwaukee Brewers after delivering 7 no-hit innings.

After tossing seven innings and throwing 99 pitches the Pirates pulled Paul Skenes from the game despite having a no-hitter going. At that juncture he had struck out 11 Brewers batters and walked just one. Milwaukee kept the game close as Aaron Civale tossed 6.1 innings in which he gave up just one earned run (in the seventh inning).

Paul Skenes has multiple outings where he has not allowed a hit.

The Brewers are not the first team to have fallen victim to a Paul Skenes no-hit performance. During Skenes’ second MLB start he tossed six no-hit innings against the Chicago Cubs. In that game he similarly walked just one batter, also struck out 11, and was at 100 pitches when he was removed from the game.

Per Baseball Reference no other rookie pitcher has had multiple outings of 6+ innings pitched and zero hits allowed. OpaStats additionally has indicated that Paul Skenes is the only pitcher in MLB history with multiple road starts consisting of zero hits, one or fewer walks, and 10+ strikeouts. Lastly, Skenes is just the fourth pitcher since 1893 to have multiple zero hit and 10+ strikeout games in a single season with the others being Nolan Ryan (1973), Max Scherzer (2015), and Justin Verlander (2022).
Paul Skenes is just 22 years old and will be under team control with the Pirates for at minimum the next six years. He is going to be a major problem for any team that faces him, not just the Milwaukee Brewers.
