Pat Murphy says Bob Uecker’s presence fueled Brewers’ rally

The Milwaukee Brewers’ season already had a storybook feel, but Friday night in Cincinnati pushed it to another level. Trailing 8-1 after two innings, Milwaukee stormed back to defeat the Reds 10-8, stretching its winning streak to 13 games to match a franchise record. Christian Yelich fueled the rally while swinging a bat that paid tribute to the late Bob Uecker.

“You can give everybody else all the credit you want. But you can’t convince me Ueck wasn’t here with us tonight. Yelly proved it. Special,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said in a post-game interview.

The Brewers have built their season on moments that feel unforgettable. At 77-44, they hold the best record in baseball and sit nine games ahead in the NL Central. Elias notes that no team had ever overcome more than a five-run deficit to extend a winning streak of 13 games or longer, but Milwaukee erased a seven-run gap to keep theirs alive.

Yelich made the night personal. After missing last season with back surgery, he held onto the Uecker bat for Players’ Weekend, knowing the late broadcaster admired its design etched with his famous home run call. With it, Yelich turned in his top outing of the year, blasting two homers, ripping a double, and driving in five runs.

His four-hit effort, combined with a bullpen that steadied the game after Jacob Misiorowski faltered early, powered Milwaukee’s 13th comeback from a seven-run deficit or greater and extended the Brewers’ winning streak to 13, tying the 1987 “Team Streak” for the longest in franchise history.

“It just felt like the right night. If you know Ueck, you know crazy things like that are going to happen when he’s involved,” the Brewers outfielder remarked.

The bullpen took control after rookie Jacob Misiorowski exited early. Andrew Vaughn’s three-run homer swung momentum, and role players Blake Lockridge and Steward Berroa added key hits to keep the rally rolling.

Injuries have piled up with stars such as Jackson Chourio and Isaac Collins sidelined, yet Milwaukee continues to find contributors. In spring, Murphy spoke to his team about loss, from playoff heartbreak to Uecker’s passing, and left them with a message that carries even greater meaning now: “Heroes get remembered and legends never die.”

The Brewers sit at 13-0, widening their lead in the NL Central to nine games over the second-place Cubs.
