The Packers’ wide receivers have been in the NFL news quite a bit this year. Between the Adams’ trade, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson being drafted, and Watkins signing, the Packers have stayed busy at receiver.
One player in particular has been questioned throughout the offseason. Sammy Watkins is coming off the worst season of his career at 28-years old. Many people think he has a lot left in the tank and last season was a mere hiccup. Others, have been serious critics about the injury history of Watkins, but in due time everyone will learn if he still has it or not.
Watkins played three seasons with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs while also securing a Super Bowl. He also played for Lamar Jackson last year as well. The quarterback pedigree is certainly there, as Watkins aims to catch passes from Aaron Rodgers throughout the 2022 season.
Sammy Watkins Interview:
Packers analyst Larry McCarren had a chance to catch up with Watkins and ask him a few questions. Among what he asked was a question regarding his current and former quarterbacks. Watkins was asked to choose between All-Pro’s Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers.
Watkins responded by saying “I think Pat is incredibly good but A-Rod is on a whole ‘nother level.” His praise for Rodgers comes after throwing for 4115 yards and 37 touchdowns as well as leading the Packers to 13 wins. He has been one of the most productive and efficient quarterbacks in the league. He is also coming off of back to back MVP wins. Rodgers looks to build off of last season while Watkins attempts to rebuild his career.
Watkins could be a serious weapon for Rodgers, who will be throwing to some new targets this year. The best year of the receiver’s career came in 2015 when he had 1047 yards, nine touchdowns, and 60 receptions. He’s always had an incredible ability to get open and hold onto the ball. Watkins aims to replicate some of what he did in 2015 after his dismal 2021 campaign.
While comparing Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers would be a separate conversation, one thing is for sure in 2022; Both quarterbacks will be competing for a Super Bowl.
