Packers could use top NFL Draft pick to fill biggest need

The Packers don’t currently own a first-round draft choice, but that doesn’t mean general manager Brian Gutekunst won’t be able to fill arguably the biggest hole on the roster with Green Bay’s first selection later this spring.

As a result of shipping two first-round draft choices to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons, the Packers won’t be selecting until the second round. Still, Gutekunst might still land a top prospect at one of the biggest needs on the defense.

Packers could take cornerback in second round of the NFL Draft

Green Bay Coach Matt LaFleur, left, talks with General Manager Brian Gutekunst during practice on July 25, 2025, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

Over at Bleacher Report, the Bleacher Report Scouting Department put together a list of each team’s most pressing needs and the prospects who could fill them, with outside cornerback taking the top spot for the Packers.

“The Packers signed Nate Hobbs last offseason,” the B/R Scouting Department writes of Green Bay. “And tried to make him an outside cornerback, but that didn’t work out. While Carrington Valentine and Keisean Nixon are both solid, the defense could use a premier talent to lock down the perimeter of the secondary.”

If Green Bay follows this blueprint, there’s a legitimate possibility that one of the top cornerbacks, such as Texas’ Malik Muhammad, or Ohio State’s Davison Igbinosun could still be on the board when Gutekunst and the Packers first go on the clock with pick No. 52 overall.

While Green Bay could look to bolster the offensive line, or mine a pass rusher to pair opposite Parsons, adding a blue-chip cornerback might be the upgrade that could be most significant across the roster, and if Muhammad or Igbinsosun are the best player on Gutekunst’s board, and available, the Packers would be wise to strike.
