With the 2023 NFL offseason close to officially getting underway, the Green Bay Packers are going to be one of the most intriguing teams to watch. Obviously, the Aaron Rodgers situation has captivated the media right now, but there are a lot more situations the Packers will need to navigate as well. One of those has to do with the safety position, with Adrian Amos set to hit free agency and Darnell Savage Jr. not developing as planned.
All season long, fans were frustrated with the defensive scheme put together by defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Even Amos, who had been a stud for the Green Bay defense, had a rough year.
That could lead the Packers to making some changes in the secondary. If they let Amos walk, they will need to replace him. Thankfully, there are a few very talented young safeties coming out in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Packers Snag A Safety In New Mock Draft
In a new mock draft released by CBS Sports, the Packers addressed their safety concerns with the No. 15 overall pick. They have Green Bay taking Alabama standout Brian Branch in the first round.
Branch did everything on the back seven of Alabama’s defense this past season. He’ll be a welcomed addition to the Packers roster.
Branch would certainly be an intriguing pick for the Packers. Not only would he be one of the best talents available at No. 15, but he would fit a big-time need. He also has legitimate star potential at the NFL level.

During the 2022 season with the Crimson Tide, Branch ended up recording 90 total tackles to go along with three sacks, two interceptions, and seven defended passes. He is capable of making plays in pass coverage, but is also a sure tackler. Those are things that the Packers need to prioritize in their new safety if they choose to move on from their current duo.
Standing in at 6-foot-0 and a shade under 200 pounds, Branch possesses a ton of speed and athleticism. He has some work to do on his game, but he would be able to come in and start immediately if asked to do so.
Some fans may not like the idea of using another first-round pick on a defensive player. However, there are so many holes in that defense with free agents who could leave that the Packers need to address the situation. Branch is a very good player and would win over the fan base quickly if selected.
