Green Bay just signed Kurt Benkert to their roster. This news comes days after the Packers added another quarterback, Blake Bortles. They also worked out former Indianapolis QB Chad Kelly.
Benkert announced the move on social media, posting a picture of himself wearing a Packers sweatshirt and signing his contract. He captioned it, “The best advice I can give anyone is to believe in yourself. I’m so thankful.”
College & NFL Careers
Benkert began his college career at East Carolina University before transferring to the University of Virginia. There, he recorded numerous impressive statistics and broke several school records. Upon leaving UVA, Benkert led the program in single-season passing yards, completions, attempts, games with 200+ yards, and total offense.
In May 2018, Benkert signed with Atlanta as an undrafted free agent. He was placed on IR following a 2019 preseason toe injury. Benkert spent his 2020 season on the practice squad, with the exception of being activated for the Falcons’ week 11 matchup against the Saints. Atlanta waived his contract in February 2021. Benkert has yet to play a regular season game in the NFL.
Looking Ahead
Throughout the past few weeks, there has been much speculation surrounding Green Bay’s quarterback situation. With no recent updates, it still remains to be seen how all the drama between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ front office might be resolved.
However, the team certainly hasn’t wasted any time adding depth to the quarterback position. Last week, Green Bay had just two QBs on their roster — the reigning MVP and Jordan Love, Rodgers’ presumed successor. Now, with the signings of Bortles and Benkert, they have four. We’ll have to wait and see how things shake out in the Packers’ QB room during the coming months.
One thing we do know for sure, though, is that Benkert is thrilled to be heading to Green Bay! An hour after announcing his new contract, he posted a tweet in reference to his daughter, Scout, asking excitedly, “Where can I get a cheese head for an 8 month old?”
