The new-look Packers roster has started OTAs as they begin to prepare for the 2023 NFL season. The competition for spots on the final 53-man roster has officially begun. Right now, the Packers are mostly in shorts, but players on the roster bubble this year have to start showing out now.
There will be plenty of competition this year at certain positions as this will be a very young Packers roster. Here are players on the roster bubble that can make the final 53-man roster this year.
Packers Roster Bubble Consideration
Chris Slayton
One player on the defensive line that could push for a Packers roster spot this year is Chris Slayton. Slayton had a pretty solid preseason last year but was a victim of a very crowded defensive line room. This year it is pretty much the same. Players like Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, TJ Slaton, Colby Wooden, and even Karl Brooks are pretty much roster locks.
That does mean one possible spot is left for him, and he has a chance to take it. He would have to beat out second-year player Johnathan Ford for the sixth spot on the defensive line. He was close last year, and if Slayton can make that jump this year, he could make the final 53-man Packers roster.
Brenton Cox
One of the players to watch is UDFA Brenton Cox, as he is a very intriguing player. He was kicked off two college teams causing him to not be drafted. Outside of character concerns, Cox has all of the tools and talent to become a very good pass rusher in the NFL. The Packers should be the perfect environment to help him grow as a player.
Not to mention having good leaders in Rashan Gary and Preston Smith to help him. Cox may compete for the fifth spot with Justin Hollins and Johnathan Garvin. However, his chances will probably be much better as Rashan Gary might miss the first couple of weeks of the season as he recovers fully from his torn ACL last year. Overall, if Cox can show out and stay out of trouble, he has a good chance to make the final 53-man Packers roster.
Camren McDonald
The Packers indeed have a young tight end room this year as they try to revamp that entire position. They drafted Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft in the second and third rounds this year. It continued signing Camren McDonald as UDFA from Florida State. McDonald was solid in his time at Florida State. Unfortunately, it was hard for him to get the recognition that he deserved because Florida State endured some turmoil in the football program over the years.
However, watching the film, he is a very dynamic player in the passing game and runs very crisp routes like a wide receiver. He understands how to find the soft zones in a defense and can be used to attack the middle of the field. Now the Packers most likely keep four tight ends this year.
Three spots will be taken with Josiah Deguara, Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft. The fourth spot is an open competition, as Tyler Davis is not considered a roster lock. If Mcdonald can perform well in the summer and also get on special teams, he will definitely have a case to make the Packers roster this year.
Dallin Leavitt
Dallinn Leavitt is not better than the other safeties ahead of him on the depth chart. He seems to be the odd man out in that safety group. But how will he make the roster this year? The answer to that is pretty simple, and that is special teams. The Packers have rebuilt the special team’s unit, which has not been good in the past few years. In the second half of last year’s season, the special team unit for the Packers played really well.
One of the reasons was Leavitt, as he was one of their best players in that group. Not to mention Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Rich Bisaccia really likes and speaks highly of him. Dalin Leavitt’s play on special teams can once again sneak him onto the final 53-man Packers roster.
