At 4-8, the Green Bay Packers have the slimmest of chances to make the NFL Playoffs. While the season has been a major disappointment, there have been some bright spots. One of those bright spots has been the play of their rookie wide receivers, namely Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson. In fact, those two rookies, along with seventh round pick Samori Toure, lead all NFL rookies in an important receiving stat.
Packers Rookie Wide Receivers Lead the NFL in Team Touchdowns by First-Year Players
Believe it or not, 11 of the Packers’ touchdowns this season have been scored by their three rookie wide receivers. That is, by far and away, the most of any team’s total touchdowns scored by rookie players:

If one were to add the total number of touchdowns scored by rookies on NFC teams, one would find that the sum is 11, the same number as the Packers. If focusing just on the NFC North, the Packers’ rookies lead 11-1. Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. is the only other first-year wide receiver in the division to have scored a touchdown.
Breaking Down the Packers Rookie Wide Receiver Stats
Romeo Doubs
Fourth round draft pick Romeo Doubs was the main rookie wide receiver that received a great deal of attention during training camp, preseason, and the first part of the regular season. Doubs’ played in the Packers’ first nine games before spraining his ankle in Week Nine. In those nine games, he recorded 31 receptions for 314 yards and three touchdowns.
Christian Watson
Christian Watson, whom the Packers traded up to draft in the second round, got off to a slow start this season. He was hampered by a knee injury that kept him out of training camp and the preseason. When he did get on the field at the start of the regular season, he was plagued by drops, injuries, and inconsistent play. He did score his first NFL touchdown in Week Four on a 15-yard run against the New England Patriots. Over the last three games, Watson has 12 receptions for 265 yards and six touchdowns. His recent hot streak has given him season totals (thus far) of 22 receptions for 353 yards and seven total touchdowns.
Samori Toure
The Packers rookie wide receiver with the least game experience is seventh round pick Samori Toure. He has four receptions for 75 yards this season. However, one of those was a 37-yard touchdown catch in the Packers’ loss to the Buffalo Bills. Toure is currently ahead of Sammy Watkins on the Packers’ depth chart and may see his role increase as the season progresses.
