Packers rookie report:
Romeo Doubs
On the Packer’s opening drive Sunday, Romeo Doubs had three catches for 33 yards, including a five-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers, the first of Doub’s career. He would finish the game with eight catches on eight targets for 73 yards. In his first career start, Doubs looked anything but a rookie leading all Packers receivers in receptions and yards. Romeo played 55 offensive snaps on Sunday for 89% of the offense and was in for a single special teams play. Of Rodger’s 35 passes Sunday, one in every five passes was ushered toward Doubs. Early in the season, that connection and confidence could mean our expectations of Doubs should be trending upward.
In a post-game interview, Romeo showed incredible pose. When asked how it felt after giving such an impressive performance, Romeo stated, “I’m just ready to move forward. I understand it’s part of the game. A good performance or bad performance.” Romeo quickly emphasized the team’s win Sunday and praised the Defense for the last stop to solidify the win.
Doubs, surprisingly, is only rostered in 16.2% of fantasy leagues, according to ESPN+ Fantasy. I’d expect that to change quickly. At just 22, Doubs has unfathomable potential. Surrounded by a group of tenured wideouts and a hall of fame quarterback, this may be a special season for Doubs. Oh, and he’s the first Packer to record eight receptions in a game since Devante Adams.
Quay Walker
Romeo Doubs wasn’t the only impressive Packers rookie on Sunday. 1st-round pick Quay Walker saw the field for 55 snaps, and seven special team plays, recording five tackles, three solo, and one game-changing forced fumble. The fumble came with 51 seconds left in the first half. The Buccaneers had recovered possession in their inzone after a fumble from Aaron Jones. Tom Brady had driven his team 40 yards, closing in on a potential score to seize the momentum before the half. Breshad Perriman ran a short slant, catching the ball six yards past the line of scrimmage. Perriman took the ball 10 yards upfield before being gang tackled by Adrian Amos and Quay Walker. Walker’s tackle forced the ball out. It was a pretty play by the rook.
That play would have put the Bucs in field goal range, drastically impacting the end of the game.
Devonte Wyatt
Wyatt is the other 1st round pick from Georgia, taken 28th overall. Wyatt played seven defensive snaps Sunday. In addition, he played six snaps on special teams. He looked all around solid, but I don’t think he is in line to replace Dean Lowery.
