The Packers had five sacks in their 24-12 win over the Rams on Monday night. Leading the way was Preston Smith with two sacks. Justin Hollins added a half-sack. The other 2.5 sacks in the game were from Kingsley Enagbare, Quay Walker, and Devonte Wyatt (half-sack). Each are rookies. It was the first time since 1987 that the Packers had three rookies record a sack in the same game.
Wyatt and Walker were both first-round draft choices of the Packers in the 2022 draft. Enagbare was a fifth-round selection. He now has three sacks on the season; Walker has 1.5, and Wyatt’s half-sack on Monday was the first of his season and career.
Pack rookie defensive trio join rare team, NFL group
Enagbare, Walker and Wyatt became only the second Packers’ rookie trio to have sacks in the same game since October 4, 1987. In that game versus the Vikings, rookies David Caldwell, Jeff Drost and Carl Sullivan each recorded sacks. Drost had a pair of sacks; Caldwell and Sullivan each had a half-sack.
The 2022 Packers’ trio also became the first rookie threesome with sacks since October 3 last season. Dallas’ rookie trio of Chauncey Golston, Osa Odighizuwa and Micah Parsons each had a sack in the same game for the Cowboys.
There have been six times in Packers’ history where two rookies had sacks in the same game. The last time it occurred was December 20, 2009. Both Brad Jones and Clay Matthews had a sack in that contest.
38 rookie trios have recorded sacks in same game
The Packers’ defensive rookie trio of Enagbare, Walker and Wyatt became the 38th rookie threesome to have sacks in the same game… that is if you ignore portions of the 1987 NFL season when there was the players’ strike.
In that season, there were several games where “rookies” or replacement players filled in for the regular NFL players. Statistics showed that there were six games during Weeks #4-#6 where replacement players recorded sacks as “rookies.” In two games six “replacement rookies” each had a sack. In one game, five “replacement rookies” had a sack, and in four games four “replacement rookies” had a sack.
By ignoring these three weeks in the 1987 season, the Packers’ threesome of Enagbare, Walker and Wyatt tie the NFL record for most rookies to record a sack in the same game.
