Former Super Bowl-winning defensive back Richard Sherman didn’t hold back in his biting criticism of Packers quarterback Jordan Love, recently.
“I don’t think that Jordan Love has showed me anything that really made me feel like: ‘Oh my God! He’s one of the guys’ — guys that can win it all,” Sherman said on the January 13 episode of his podcast.
After watching Love struggle mightily against the Philadelphia Eagles in a 22-10 loss that ended the Packers’ season in the NFC Wild Card round, Sherman suggested that Green Bay’s major offseason investment in running back Josh Jacobs is an indictment of their concerns about Love and the young quarterback’s ability to carry the offense.
“I said it early in the season: ‘Oh, that’s why they got Josh Jacobs,’ they don’t trust the quarterback. They’re going to treat him like a rookie. A $55 million rookie, but a rookie. They’re going to run the ball well, they’re gonna limit his pass attempts because they don’t want him to throw the game away,” Sherman said recently.”
Richard Sherman Sounds Off on Packers QB Jordan Love’s Turnovers
In the Packers’ season-ending defeat, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on their first possession, after recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff, which never quite allowed Green Bay to get into their game plan.
Jacobs finished with 81 rushing yards and a score as Love completed 20-of-33 passing attempts for 212 yards and three interceptions.
“If somebody’s able to stop the run like the Philadelphia Eagles,” Sherman pointed out. “Then they’re (Packers) going to have a big issue, because they’re going to have to take the training wheels off and they’re going to have to let him throw the ball — and he hasn’t shown that he can take care of the ball at a high level.”
Love finished the 2024 campaign passing for 3,389 yards with 25 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. However, those turnovers are going to nag at Love throughout this offseason, and the Packers quarterback is going to need to be better than he was in critical losses to the Eagles, Detroit Lions, and Minnesota Vikings this season.
