Malik Taylor Did Not Have Much of a Shot at the 53-Man Roster
Malik Taylor had an uphill battle to the Packers 53-man roster. Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Sammy Watkins, and Amari Rodgers are having good camps, and are veterans. They were joined by the Packers’ three wide receiver draft picks: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure. Not only that, but Juwann Winfree and Danny Davis have both been playing well in practice. Both also had solid games in the Packers’ preseason contest with the San Francisco 49ers.
Taylor’s tenure with the Packers ends without much fanfare. Despite making the 53-man roster in 2020 and 2021, Taylor could never get his preseason production to translate to the the regular season. Last year, he had just two receptions for 14 yards in 10 games. In 2020, he had appeared in 15 games and caught five passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Not Good News for Danny Davis or Rico Gafford
Neither Danny Davis nor Rico Gafford can really afford to miss much practice time. Davis is already expected to be a practice squad player, though he did (as previously mentioned) have a good game against the 49ers. Gafford, however, did not. In the meantime, other roster hopefuls have stepped up, namely Keisean Nixon and Shemar Jean Charles. Gafford’s main strength is special teams, and if he cannot be on the field for those reps, he may not make the roster.
