The NFL off-season is in full swing with teams having to be under the cap and free agency opening up on March 16, just 6 days from now. The Packers have plenty of work to do on their own but other teams are freeing up space right now too. One interesting name to keep an eye on and a player Green Bay should call on is Baltimore wide receiver Miles Boykin who is rumored to be on the trade market.
Who is Miles Boykin?
Miles Boykin is a 25-year-old receiver out of Notre Dame. He has been lackluster in the NFL so far in his career but he tested very well at the combine. Boykin posted a RAS (relative athletic score) of 9.94 which is elite and Packers GM Brian Gutekunst has made an effort to bring in players with a high RAS score. Boykins ran a 4:42 40-yard dash at 6’4” which is very fast. He also posted a vertical of 43.5 inches which shows how explosive he can be. He has been injured the past few seasons and hasn’t been able to put it together but sometimes players just need a change of scene to really “figure it out”. In Boykin’s career, he has 33 receptions for 470 yards and 7 touchdowns.
Why Should Green Bay Call?
Currently Green Bay has a problem with the receiver room with the only receivers currently under contract being Randell Cobb and Amari Rodgers. Davante Adams was officially franchise tagged and a long-term deal is expected before the 16th but that leaves just 3 receivers and Randall Cobb is a likely cut candidate to save more than 8 million for the Packers. The Packers also need to look at re-signing Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Allen Lazard, their number 2 and 3 receivers from last season.
Who Would Miles Boykin replace?
Currently, it looks like MVS might have priced himself out of the Packers price range with his play the past few seasons. Boykin could immediately replace MVS as the “over the top” deep threat that opens up the offense. His athleticism should translate to a home run guy.
What Should the Packers Trade?
The Packers should look to swap picks rather than give the picks up. They will have a rather tough time signing multiple free agents so having more shots in the draft should be a big deal to them.
Ravens get
Pick 92
Packers get
Miles Boykin
Pick 99
This allows the Packers to still make most of their picks but slides them down slightly in the 3rd round and they lose their very last selection in the draft. This also moves the Ravens up 7 spots in round 3 and allows them to take a better player and move on from Boykin who looks to be a fringe roster player right now for them. This would be a cheap over the top, deep-threat player who would allow the Packers a little more flexibility in the draft.
