Packers’ loss to Panthers wasn’t just an embarrassment, it was historically bad

The Green Bay Packers’ 16-13 home loss to Carolina, a game in which they were 13.5-point favorites, wasn’t the worst loss of the week. It wasn’t just their worst loss of the season or any NFL team this year.

It wasn’t even just the worst loss in the league since the Dolphins caved to the Titans in 2023.

According to information from ESPN team reporter Rob Demovsky, it was among the biggest flops in franchise history.

The Packers’ loss as a 13.5-point favorite is the largest upset in the NFL since the 2023 season (Titans +14.5 at Miami) and tied the Packers’ largest upset loss since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger, according to ESPN Research.

Yesterday was only one game, but it speaks to more than a single instance

The good news: it’s only one game. A loss as nearly 90% implied moneyline favorites counts just as much as a coinflip defeat. The Packers aren’t concerned with covering the number, nor should they be.

Also: they are 5-2-1, a half-game up on Detroit for the NFC North Division lead. The sky isn’t falling. Yet.

But the big fat L the Packers cooked up against the Panthers is not an isolated incident. Failing to put down weak opponents – yesterday, the offense didn’t even show up – is part of a larger trend with this team. As favorites of 6.5 or more, Green Bay is 0-5 against the spread on the season.

That lack of intensity caught up with them at home against Carolina and on the road in Cleveland. Both times, Jordan Love played a pivotal role in defeat by giving the opposition a short field via an interception.

The pick against the Browns came in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Yesterday, the Panthers picked him off midway through the third, taking over at Green Bay’s 38-yard line and punching it into the endzone to take a 13-6 lead.

It was an embarrassing loss – like Demovsky says, it tied their largest upset ever – and even though it’s just one game, fans are understandably disgusted.

I’ve defended LaFleur for a long time but I’m done. This whole coaching staff needs to go.

LaFleur should be on the hottest of hot seats the rest of the season not kicking the field goal with 10 minutes left was absolutely criminal. Green Bay fired Mike McCarthy after losing a similar game to Arizona in 2018.

    — Michael Wagner (@jw_mike) November 2, 2025

Last year couldn’t beat the best of the NFC. This year, can’t beat Cleveland and Carolina. For whatever reason, this team seems to think they’ve already won something. Time to WAKE UP!

    — Tom Foolery (@TomFoolery706) November 2, 2025

Please ask if he’ll give up play calling

    — 🧀is🔙 (@McKinneyDPOY) November 2, 2025

What’s the answer? Taking away LaFleur’s play sheet? Taking away his job? Drafting a new quarterback? None of those are realistic or advisable options, particularly midseason. Regardless of what happens next week versus the Eagles, if the Packers pull something similar in Week 11 against the 2-7 Giants, fair or not, the seat will be more than just warm for everyone in the organization.
