Matthew Golden is the Green Bay Packers’ pick in the first round (23rd) of the 2025 NFL draft and it is something really special for the team.
The Texas Longhorns standout becomes the first ever player of his position to be picked by the Packers in the first round in 23 years. He was not even born yet the last time Green picked a wideout in the first round.
Both fans and analysts rave about this pick by the team as the position happens to be among the obvious holes in the team last season.
“Golden’s starting-level traits and big leap forward as a go-to playmaker have him primed to become a productive catch-maker with the potential to develop into a WR1 in the future,” commentator Lance Zierlein said about Golden.

The 21-year-old played his last season with the Longhorns after spending two seasons with Houston Cougars.
He grew into an elite playmaker in 2024, recording 49 receptions for 787 yards and eight touchdowns while also reaching team glory.
Matthew Golden excited to work with Jordan Love
Some fans can’t help but reminisce the times when team legend Aaron Rodgers was denied the chance to have a new wide receiver during the draft.
Jordan Love, one can say, is lucky that he has a different experience.
Golden is already excited to play with him saying he will be a trusted target.
“Talented quarterback, can get out the pocket and make plays and damn sure can throw the ball,” he said in an interview with Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
“I’m letting him know as soon as I see him, ‘Man, you got a reliable target. You can trust me.’”
The kid’s confidence is just top notch right now.
“I got a lot in my game. I can play inside, play out. I could also take the top off. Whatever the team needs me to do, I’m definitely that guy they need.”
Fans can’t wait to see what Golden can do. The 2025 NLF season will open on September 4.
