“Menace Along The Line of Scrimmage” Linked to Packers as Free Agency Nears

The four teams remaining alive ahead of the NFC and AFC Championship Games have all prioritized dominance along both lines of scrimmage, which is a formula general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers should look to replicate this offseason.

Never was the gap more noticeable between where the Packers are and where they need to be than against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Caround round.

That day, the Eagles rushed for 169 yards and by and large kept quarterback Jalen Hurts upright, allowing just two sacks.

When free agency begins, Gutekunst and the Packers could look to prioritize signing one of the Eagles’ most disruptive defensive linemen.

Why The Packers Should Sign Milton Williams

NFL Analyst Tyler Brooke suggests Eagles defensive lineman Milton Williams could be an ideal fit for the Packers when free agency begins later this spring.

“The Green Bay Packers have a couple of issues up front defensively,” Brooke points out for The 33rd Team. “Despite a strong year from defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. They finished 26th in pass rush win rate, and they are still looking for a breakout playmaker on their defensive line.

“At the very least, Milton Williams could be a candidate to help with both of those issues. The former third-round pick was a menace in the trenches this year, generating five sacks and 46 pressures despite playing a rotational role for the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Williams was downright stellar for the Eagles this season, including posting a 90.43 pass-rush grade, which ranks second among NFL defensive linemen from Pro Football Focus.
A potential plug-and-play difference-maker and disruptive force up front, it’s easy to see why Williams could be one of Green Bay’s top targets.
Through his first four seasons, Williams has posted 132 total tackles with 11.5 sacks.

Gutekunst and the Packers are expected to begin free agency with upwards of $36.4 million in cap space, so adding an anchor along the defensive line could prove to be a wise use of Green Bay’s spending flexibility.
