The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a new era of the franchise. After nearly two decades of having Mike Tomlin coaching the team, the Steelers are now going to be handled by former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.
“I am pleased to announce the hiring of Mike McCarthy as our next head coach,” said Steelers president Art Rooney II in a statement (via Pittsburgh’s official website).
“Mike brings a proven track record of success, championship experience, and a deep understanding of what it takes to build and sustain a winning culture in the National Football League.”
Ex-Packers head coach McCarthy is glad that he’ll be back on the sidelines
Pittsburgh’s confidence in McCarthy is only matched by his enthusiasm in being able to coach again in the NFL, let alone for another iconic franchise.
“I love coaching and I missed the locker room, McCarthy said in a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
Added the 62-year-old McCarthy: “I felt like it was meant to be here in Pittsburgh.”

McCarthy coached the Packers from 2006 to 2018. Two years later, he was hired by the Dallas Cowboys to be their head coach, succeeding Jason Garrett.
In his career, McCarthy has a 185-123-2 coaching record in the NFL. He is one of only 15 head coaches in NFL history to have at least 185 wins. His most memorable win as a head coach is none other than Green Bay’s Super Bowl XLV win.
In the 2025 campaign, the Steelers returned to the top of the AFC North with a 10-7 record but lost right away in the NFL playoffs, as they were eliminated by the Houston Texans in the wild-card round.
