The Packers clearly understand that once again the cornerback position has become a need. The Packers have drafted five defensive backs in the first two rounds on the last four drafts. One would think they are set in the secondary, but some picks haven’t panned out. The Packers are expected to lose starter Kevin King in free agency, so they will need someone to start alongside young superstar Jaire Alexander. They recently met with one of the premier corners in the draft class, Asante Samuel Jr.
Who?
If the name sounds familiar it isn’t an anomaly. Asante Samuel Jr. is the son of long-time corner Asante Samuel. Asante Samuel won two super bowls and was selected to the pro bowl four times. Now his son is trying to make a name for himself. Asante Samuel Jr. is a projected first-round pick who had a great season at Florida State. Over eight games in 2020, Samuel Jr. had:
- Six Pass Breakups
- Three Interceptions
- Two Fumble Recoveries
- One Forced Fumble
Rank
Asante Samuel Jr. allowed a 46.2 passer rating in coverage last season.

Samuel is listed as the 29th overall prospect in the class according to Pro Football Focus(@PFF) so he is a real possibility for the Packers in the first round. He is slightly undersized at 5′ 10″, 184 lbs, but he is an exceptional athlete. The Packers should have no issue overlooking size when Jaire Alexander has similar measurables and has turned into a superstar. He is ranked as the fourth-best corner by Pro Football Focus, so if the Packers feel he may be gone they might have to trade up. Gutekunst has shown he is willing to trade up and get the guy he wants.

Overall
Before anything can be predicted about the Packers draft there are a lot of moves that can be made in free agency. The Packers have in-house decisions to make as well. Everything will play into whether the Packers draft Samuel.
