The Green Bay Packers open their season with a big inter-conference matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Week one matchup will take place in Brazil, between two teams who truly believe they can fight for the top spot in the NFC.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur admitted to a pretty eye-opening plan for the offense.
Green Bay Packers HC Matt LaFleur Makes One Plan Known On Offense
After practice on Monday, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur answered multiple questions centered around the right guard position. Those questions included where Jordan Morgan, a first-round pick, and Sean Rhyan, a third-round pick, would be lining up.
Morgan has looked good since returning to the field after recovering from a shoulder injury, according to LaFleur. He made it clear they’ll be ready:
When asked if there will be a competition at right guard on Friday, alluding to a rotation approach that LaFleur has used in the past, the head coach responded, “It’s always a competition.” When asked directly about who will start, he said, “We have a plan.”
LaFleur doesn’t want to show his cards just yet, but we do know that the Packers used both Rhyan and Jon Runyan Jr., who left in free agency this offseason, at right guard last season. In the second half of the year, Rhyan and Runyan traded series, which might be a way to ease Morgan into his first taste of real NFL action.
All of this assumes that the Packers’ offensive line is healthy, which it is—right now. If someone goes down, especially on the interior, Rhyan becoming a full-time player is a near certainty. Rhyan has backed up both guard positions in the preseason and is the team’s primary backup center option. Rookie fifth-round pick Jacob Monk can also contribute there. The Packers only carry one true center on their team: starter Josh Myers.
So LaFleur has a plan. What is it? He won’t tell you. We have a pretty good guess that it involves both Rhyan and Morgan, though, as long as everyone is healthy.
Keeping Jordan Love upright while also providing the offense a rushing attack will be two major keys to success this year. The offensive line certainly underwent some changes this off-season, however, Matt LaFleur and company feel confident in what they can put on the field.
