The Green Bay Packers did quarterback Jordan Love no favors in Sunday’s NFC Wild Card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
During the regular season, Love and the Packers were one of the best teams running play-action under center, as evident by Love’s 113.7 passer rating on first down, primarily a situation where Love would be under center.
Tuesday, during his season-ending press conference, LaFleur defended the decision to primarily have Love line up in the shotgun against the Eagles, resulting in a three-interception performance for Green Bay’s emerging star quarterback.
“As far as under-center play action,” LaFleur told reporters. “We ran the ball more out of the gun and the efficiency at which we ran the ball was night-and-day better out of the shotgun than it was under center. That’s kind of why we did what we did.”
LaFleur is correct, that during the regular-season the Packers ran far more efficiently out of the shotgun than with Love under center (3,508 yards to 997).
However, that does not absolve LaFleur from blame for not adjusting to the situation, Love’s struggles, or the way the Eagles were sending free rushers throughout the game.
If the Packers are going to take the next step closer towards a Super Bowl, LaFleur and the offense may need to become more adaptable in 2025.
