In a reassuring development for Green Bay Packers fans ahead of tonight’s high-stakes NFC Wild Card playoff matchup against the rival Chicago Bears, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that the team plans to open contract extension discussions with head coach Matt LaFleur . The talks will come shortly after the 2025 season concludes — with the clear mutual goal of securing a long-term deal:
Once the Green Bay Packers’ season is over, and they hope it’s later rather than sooner, the plan is to act quickly for one of the organization’s most visible and important faces.
Sources say the Packers plan to engage head coach Matt LaFleur in contract discussions shortly after the season ends, with the mutual goal of extending his contract. LaFleur, whose deal expires following the 2026 season, has a 76-40-1 record and is widely considered to be one of the better coaches in the NFL.
2025 Season Recap and Playoff Context

The Packers finished the regular season at 9-7-1, good enough for the No. 7 seed in the NFC despite a rough close (four straight losses). The team was hampered by injuries all season long, including the absence of star edge rusher Micah Parsons in the second half.
Despite the struggles, Green Bay made the playoffs for the sixth time in LaFleur’s seven years and the third straight season under QB Jordan Love.
The team has shown flashes of brilliance, like strong offensive outings from Love but early post-season exits in recent years (3-5 playoff record overall under LaFleur) fueled some doubts.
Regardless, it looks like LaFleur will be in Green Bay for the long haul.
