The Green Bay Packers‘ offense is picking up steam at exactly the right time, and wide receiver Christian Watson has become a bigger piece of the puzzle around quarterback Jordan Love, in recent weeks.
Watson has now surpassed 110 receiving yards twice in the past five weeks, catching 13 passes for 387 yards over that span.
While Watson was overshadowed by fellow playmaking wideout Romeo Doubs, who caught three passes for 40 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Sunday night’s 30-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks, Watson’s performance in Week 15 drew praise from Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
“I think Christian’s been practicing better, I think he’s had a great probably last two months,” LaFleur told reporters at his press conference on December 17. “He’s really shown up. It’s showing up on game day. He’s made a lot of great plays. That catch he made on the sideline, that was big time. He also drew a pass interference call. That’s a 40-yard penalty that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. But that was a big time play. And not to mention he’s blocking his butt off as well.”
The Packers’ passing game has thrived in recent weeks, thanks to wide receiver Jayden Reed’s speed, and tight end Tucker Kraft’s reliability, particularly on passes over the middle of the field. Watson becoming a steady and reliable contributor could elevate Love’s performance when Green Bay needs it most down the stretch and into the postseason.
So far this season, Watson has caught 29 passes for a career-high 620 yards and two touchdowns. As Watson continues to gain the trust of LaFleur and Love, he could be in for a strong closing stretch of the 2024 campaign.
