The Packers will need to explore options in free agency
The Green Bay Packers are still fighting for a chance at the playoffs in Week 15. However, they’re close to being eliminated right around Christmas. The Packers’ offseason might be sooner than most fans expected before the season. The team will need to change the roster around after a disappointing season. One analyst suggests the Packers go for an offensive lineman in free agency.
The Packers have two offensive linemen up for free agency in 2023, Elgton Jenkins and Yosh Nijman. They also need to decide if they’re keeping offensive tackle David Bakhtiari. If they lost one of those three, the Packers would need to look to the draft or free agency for a replacement.
Bo Wulf with The Athletic wrote about each NFL team’s offseason wish list for free agency. Wulf wrote that the Packers should consider signing Ravens offensive guard Ben Powers. (In this article, Wulf had the New England Patriots signing Jenkins.) Wulf thinks Powers would help a team looking to transition into having a more run-heavy attack:
“If Elgton Jenkins cashes in elsewhere as a free agent, the Packers will need to find a reliable starting guard. Powers has started at both guard positions for the Ravens over the past three seasons and entered the week ranked in the top 10 of ESPN’s run-block win rate for all guards — a plus if Green Bay is willing to lean further into a run-heavy attack. More to the point, he has a great name that sort of sounds made up. Good start to a conspiracy theory.”
Powers would be a great addition to the offensive line
Powers would be a solid body on the Packers’ offensive line next season. An offensive lineman who can help in short-distance down situations would be ideal for next season. Although his win rate was impressive, Powers has been given a low 49.4 overall grade by Pro Football Focus for his run blocking this season.
However, Powers was graded highly for his pass blocking, with a grade of 87.7 by PFF. Powers has given up no sacks of the quarterback this season. Powers could fortify the Packers’ passing attack as well.
