The Green Bay Packers are among the hottest teams in the NFL, seemingly peaking at the right time with three critical games remaining in the regular season and a slim chance remaining of winning the NFC North crown.
While quarterback Jordan Love’s strong play has been a catalyst, especially the fact that he has tossed eight touchdown passes to just one interception over the past five games, the Packers’ defense also seems to be coming into its own when Green Bay has needed it most.
Packers’ Complementary Football on Display in Dominance of Key Metric
The most successful teams and the teams that make improbable runs at championships typically do so by getting hot at the right time and excelling at complementary football.
Don’t look now, but that’s exactly what the Packers are doing as Santa Claus prepares to take flight and the games have become more meaningful.
Following Sunday night’s 30-13 blowout of the Seattle Seahawks, the Packers lead the league in net sack yards, according to veteran NFL analyst Mike Tanier.
According to Tanier, the Packers lead the league in net sack yards, at plus-172, which is a metric that combines offensive sack yards lost and defensive sack yards gained.
“Sack yardage totals represent real offensive/defensive quality,” Tanier writes. “So there is no reason to expect these numbers to be impacted by central tendency. That’s good news for the Packers but bad news for the Seahawks, who are about to get some more.”
The most successful franchise and the ones most consistently in the Super Bowl mix are dominant along both lines of scrimmage, which the Packers are proving to be amid this run of eight wins over the past ten weeks.
If the Packers can continue to play complementary football at this level, and Love continues his consistently dominant play, Green Bay may have the pieces in place to go much further than many expect this postseason.
