The Green Bay Packers are in line to clinch a playoff spot if they can take down the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football. New Orleans (5-9) is coming in extremely banged up and going through a tough season. Green Bay is 10-4 and has a lot to play for to ensure they’re firing on all cylinders come playoff time.
However, there could be one defensive star on the way to help them in the future.
“It Would Change Everything” Packers Suddenly Linked To 5x All-Pro (Report)
Despite the possibility of doing something special this year, the Packers should add more big pieces in the offseason no matter what happens. Khalil Mack, an eight-time Pro Bowler with the Los Angeles Chargers, was suggested as a fit by Tyler Brooke of The 33rd Team:
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst actually tried to trade for Mack in 2018 but was outbid by the Chicago Bears. Even if Mack is a few years older, he could still be a legitimate upgrade to Green Bay’s struggling pass rush.
Heading into Week 14, the Packers were 27th in the league in pass rush win rate. Rashan Gary leads the team with 5.5 sacks 34 pressures. No other player on the team has more than 3.0 sacks or 21 pressures.
That’s not going to cut it for a defense that has consistently produced takeaways. For as aggressive and promising as defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense has looked, the scheme struggles without consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
In addition, the Packers lack a veteran leader in the EDGE room after trading away Preston Smith. Signing Mack could give Gary and Lukas Van Ness a future Hall of Famer to learn from while giving the Packers a boost to their underperforming pass rush.
Here is a look at Mack’s career stats:
