The Green Bay Packers took a step back in 2024.
After losing to the Philadelphia Eagles on Wild Card weekend, it was the culmination of Green Bay and quarterback Jordan Love regressing a bit this season, unable to repeat the franchise’s 2023 run to the NFC Divisional round and taking the eventual conference champion San Francisco 49ers to the brink.
While Love struggled to navigate multiple injuries throughout the 2024 campaign and the Packers’ receiving corps were dealt crushing injuries by season’s end– including star Christian Watson tearing his ACL in a Week 18 loss to the Chicago Bears, this season’s results raise serious questions general manager Brian Gutekunst must stare down this offseason.
Perhaps the Packers can trade for an elite game-altering wide receiver to help Love take the next step, but the Packers might also need to hope that their young quarterback makes major strides.
Former NFL GM Calls Out Jordan Love
Former Minnesota Vikings general manager, and Executive of The Year winner Jeff Diamond put together the biggest keys for each NFC North team entering the 2025 season, including the Packers needing to see Love improve.
“Above all, the Packers need the 26-year-old Love to continue his development,” Diamond writes for The 33rd team. “Play better in the postseason than he did against Philly, and reach top-five quarterback status in his third year as the starter.
“His 2023 late-season performance led to a four-year, $220 million contract extension last July (second-highest-paid quarterback in new money). Love battled knee and elbow injuries this season, so he needs to stay healthy along with his talented wide receiver corps and Jenkins as the offensive line’s leader. The Packers still have the look of a team on the rise as they try to get over the hump against the top teams.”
If the Packers improve Love’s supporting cast, and the young receivers already on the roster such as Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave all take big steps in 2025 alongside Love, Green Bay is going to be a tough team to beat.
But, as Diamond points out, it all starts with Love.
