The Green Bay Packers will be sending two players to the Pro Bowl this offseason. Jaire Alexander was selected outright for the second time in his career. Elgton Jenkins was also selected after Landon Dickenson and the Philadelphia Eagles made it to the Super Bowl. As many may know, the NFL Pro Bowl is going to look very different this year. Instead of a traditional game, the participating players will play a flag football game to reduce the chance of injuries. Additionally, there will be various skill competitions as there have been over the past few years.
Former Packers Full Back John Kuhn Sees an Unfortunate Change in How Players View the Pro Bowl
John Kuhn made three Pro Bowls during his playing career. On his show, “Nine 2 Noon” on 97.3 The Game in Milwaukee, Kuhn expressed disappointment over how players view the Pro Bowl now in contrast to how it was viewed when he played:
The Pro Bowl has lost all of its honor and prestige with its players. And it’s sad to say because, you know, when I made a Pro Bowl it was such a major thing. And I can still remember Jerry Fontenot, my running backs coach at the time, calling me. I know exactly where I was, in Door County when he called me. I was doing an appearance and I was on my way back on a Tuesday. He called me and told me I made the Pro Bowl, and we cried together!
“We cried together, talking on the phone because it was an incredible honor. And now it’s not an honor. It can’t be an honor if you’re not participating. I understand if you have an injury or something of that nature. I feel like the NFL messed this up. The players, if they have an injury, they should still go. Not to play in the game, but to be there, to still walk around, unless there’s something, you know, that you can’t even walk for. Maybe they just fly out for a day or something like that.
“It was something special. The notoriety. The being able to hang around with, for me, with all the super studs in the National Football League. I remember being able to hang around in the back of the bus with Joe Thomas and Alex Mack and Tony Romo. Big time guys! And it was incredibly special! It was an incredible feeling to me!
“The players don’t feel that way anymore. It’s sad. It’s laughable. Plus the extra money, for me, as a full back, I wanted to make that little bit of extra money. But for most of the guys these days, like Josh Allen a quarterback, that little bit of extra money, $55,000, doesn’t mean all that much. It’s sad. I’m disappointed in it.
The NFL just needs to give up on the Pro Bowl, forget about the Pro Bowl games. Just give the AP, don’t give out the Pro Bowl anymore. That will be an afterthought because the players don’t really care about it anymore anyways.”
