Former Packers FB John Kuhn Shares Brutally Honest Opinion about Mike McCarthy

The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys have a few things in common. For one, they both did not achieve their goals this season. Of course, they also share the Mike McCarthy connection. In the aftermath of the Cowboys’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers,  McCarthy has been getting criticized mightily. On his radio show, “Nine 2 Noon,” John Kuhn, of of McCarthy’s former players, shared his thoughts.

Former Packers FB Shares His Thoughts on Mike McCarthy

When discussing McCarthy and the Cowboys, Kuhn had this to say:

“This is my take. He’s coached for the two most iconic franchises in the NFL. And that’s not to slight the 49ers, or the Steelers, or maybe the Patriots with all of their world championships. That’s not to slight any of these other teams. It’s simply to say that the Packers and the Cowboys are the two most iconic franchises.

“And they’re the two most national teams. If you’re going to say ‘America’s team,’ it’s one of those two teams: Packers or Cowboys.

“And I really truly think that when you’re with those teams, there’s a lot more criticism, whether it’s validated or not.

“So here is my take on yesterday’s [Sunday’s] game. They went into there, they played toe-to-toe with a team in the 49ers, and I’m going to get to the 49ers in a minute, but in a team in the 49ers, at Santa Clara, that atmosphere was unbelievable, it always is… To go in there, with a kicker who, they practiced him during the week, they went with him during the week, but he clearly still had the yips.

“To go in there with a kicker who has the yips, with a quarterback who does not play up to his potential, to lose your best offensive player in Tony Pollard. To lose all of that, and still have your team in a chance to win that football game, you must have been prepared.”

In other words, a great deal of the criticism McCarthy is getting is not deserved. Sure, he made mistakes. However, he had his team, despite its deficiencies, in the game until the very end.

Regardless of how Packers fans may choose to remember him, McCarthy is a very good coach.
