Packers: It Is Time For Brian Gutekunst To Make The Move

For two months Green Bay Packer fans have been trying to come to terms as to what  Aaron Rodgers will decide to do next season. The two options are either retire or continue to play. If Aaron decides the latter, will it be with Green Bay? That is when Brian Gutekunst steps in. Throughout the offseason, we have heard Gutekunst express his confidence in Jordan Love, but also stating that he wants Aaron Rodgers back. This here is when things start to get dicey and confusing:

Brian Gutekunst Cannot Have Both On The Roster

Jordan Love is heading into his fourth year in the NFL. and has a little to no profile to show. For a player like Love, who was a first round draft pick, the time to show his worth is fading as each game and year go by. On the other hand, Aaron Rodgers still has meaningful football that he can play. That is where things get messy. Brian Gutekunst has to to decide whether winning right now is the most important thing, or is making sure his project quarterback works out the way he hoped. Make no mistake about it, Jordan Love deserves his chance to play; and quite frankly needs to play this year. Will it be with Green Bay or another team? That is the question that needs to be answered, and honeslty, needs to be answered quickly. Based on what we have heard all offseason, signs, to me, indicate that Green Bay wants to move on with Jordan Love.

Free Agency And The NFL Draft Need To Be At The Forefront

For as talented as a team that Green Bay has despite an 8-9 record, there are quite a few holes that need to be filled via free agency and the NFL Draft. The NFL Scouting Combine began this week, which gives coaches and general managers a first glance at prospective talent. This is where Brian Gutekunst’s focus needs to be right now and for the next two months. There is not much time to deal with other situations on the team as interviews with players and free agent meetings are going to take up a chunk of time up to the end of May. If Green Bay is certain that Jordan Love has what it takes to play, then it is time to give him the opportunity. It is important to address free agency and the draft and build around a team’s quarterback to give them the best chance to succeed. This is also the reason why the urgency on fixing the quarterback situation needs to be a little bit higher than continuing to wait.

Brian Gutekunst has the ability to cut and trade players. No player has any higher authority than a general manager. As stated above, Guetkunst has spoken extremely high of Jordan Love this offseason. The question is: what is holding him back? He could very much be extra cautious on this decision and wants to do it together with Aaron Rodgers. That might be the most likely scenario. However, could it also be that Brian is not comfortable moving on from Aaron Rodgers and knows the team could struggle worse for the next couple seasons? Maybe he does not want to have that situation on his hands. Who knows what the actual situation is. In the end, time is ticking away and Green Bay needs to find a solution on this dilemma. Whether it is Aaron Rodgers at the helm, or Jordan Love as the new guy in town, it is time for Brian Gutekunst to make a decision.
