As the Packers and the rest of the NFL prepare for the upcoming draft, speculation resounds as to who the Packers will be taking in the draft. Jalen Hurts, the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, is a surprise name that has been linked to the Packers.
Aaron Rodgers, one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the league, is entering his age 37 season. He was just named to his eighth Pro Bowl and passed for over 4,000 yards for the eighth season in his career. However, when Rodgers has missed time, the Packers have struggled. Given his age and the lack of depth at the quarterback position, the Packers are apparently entertaining drafting a quarterback early in the draft.
The 2019 Season
Jalen Hurts played his first three seasons at Alabama before transferring to Oklahoma. As a Sooner, he led the entire NCAA in yards per passing attempt in 2019. He had his best season in college last year when he threw for over 3,800 yards and 32 touchdowns.
The Combine
After Hurts completed his combine workouts, he received a grade of 6.14. According to the NFL, this rating predicts that he will be a good backup who may one day become a starter. Hurts is regarded as a dual-threat quarterback with good legs. As a result, he has drawn comparisons to former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. Given that Tebow did not have sustained success in the NFL, this may not be a promising comparison. However, Hurts is regarded to be more athletic and a more accurate passer.
Conclusion
Aaron Rodgers has said that he wants to play beyond his current contract. Given that Hurts seems to require time to develop, Green Bay might be a good place for him. He will have the time and a great teacher.
