With the Draft right around the corner the Packers are certainly looking to make an impact. Now, the Packers have to make a huge splash in the draft because it is a crucial one. Green Bay has good draft capital to make moves this year. In addition, the Packers have some advantages going into the 2021 draft this year.
Advantage #1- Don’t Have to Rush the Corner They Draft This Year
One of the biggest needs for the Packers is at cornerback. Re-signing Kevin King certainly fills the void, but it would be in the Packers best interest to look for a cornerback in the draft. Last season there were a lot of rookie corners that were thrown into the starting lineup early. It did not fare well, but included players like Jeff Okudah, Jeff Gladney, and David Arnette, all who were first round picks that struggled. Corner is definitely a hard position to transition to the NFL. Thanks to Jaire Alexander and Kevin King the Packers won’t have to rush the player and just let him learn. That will be a huge advantage when the Packers are looking at the cornerback class this year.
Advantage #2- Can Be Patient at Wide Receiver
The wide receivers on the Packers are not all bad. They still can clearly add talent to that group. Like last year, this draft is deep at the receiver position. The Packers have plenty of options to choose from and the Packers can be real patient with it in the draft. There will be someone for them potentially in the first round. Also, there are lots of good options in the second or mid rounds as well. This position is most likely a need for the future because most Packers receivers are free agents after 2021. The Packers will be patient, but need to address the receiver position as the future is not certain.
Advantage #3- Draft and Develop a Defensive Linemen
Now according to scouts and analysts this defensive line class is not all impressive. Despite the Packers having a need on the defensive line. Now with Kenny Clark and Kingsley Keke being solid pieces, they can still add another player to that front. Lots of the defensive linemen in this draft like Christian Barmore are raw and need more time for development. If the Packers draft one, that player can sit and get developed and learn from guys like Kenny Clark. They can be rotated in and get their feet wet as a rookie. That is how the Packers did it with drafting Kenny Clark. He learned from former Packer Mike Daniels. This is an advantage as the Packers can draft a defensive linemen and not have to rush their development.
Advantage #4- Not Rely on Rookies Overall
In 2020 the Packers did not get a lot of production from their rookie class. It might be the same for them with the 2021 draft class as well. The Packers did not rush the development of their rookies which eased their transition. The rookies from the 2020 class contributed when injuries occurred. This year, expect the rookies from the draft to contribute and not being thrown into the starting lineup early. It will be interesting to see what the rookies will do for the Packers from the draft this year.
