After two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, many expect backup quarterback Malik Willis to leave Titletown via NFL free agency. That feeling was further reinforced on Wednesday, when general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters his thoughts on the former Liberty Flames star signal-caller’s outlook with the team.
“We’d love to have Malik back,” Gutekunst said (h/t Luke Norris of Lombardi Ave), “but at the same time, to be realistic, I think he’s going to have a lot of opportunities to play more than he would here, so we’ll see where that goes.”
That was perhaps another way of saying that Willis’ time in Green Bay is virtually over.
Willis did not see much of the field in the two seasons he spent with Green Bay so far. But in the handful of times that he did, he found ways to shine and turn heads.
He has 972 passing yards and six touchdowns with zero interceptions on a 78.7 completion rate through 11 appearances (three starts) in Packers threads. He has also rushed for 261 yards and three touchdowns and 15 first downs on 42 carries with Green Bay.
Expect Willis to leave the Packers via free agency
There should be plenty of interested parties in Willis’ services. He can also thank Green Bay for helping him improve his stock, even though he mostly played as insurance behind star quarterback Jordan Love.
Willis, who will be 27 years old in May, was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. His two seasons with the Titans were forgettable, but it has been much better for him since Green Bay acquired him from Tennessee via a trade in August 2024.
